Zeekoegat Primary School Project

Our Project

Zeekoegat Primary School is situated 7 km outside Oudtshoorn on the R328. The school teaches grades 1 to 6 and houses 92 learners, 3 teachers and 3 helpers. The crèche building consists of two classrooms, housing 43 preschool children and one teacher with her assistant. Due to ever-increasing learner numbers, the limited resources are reaching a breaking point, which is, unfortunately, the case with many rural farm schools in South Africa. The Trust started in 2015 to assist with the gross imbalance between what the Western Cape Education Department provides in funding and what is actually needed to run and accommodate the most basic needs in a low-income community such as our farming community.

The project was the inspiration of Steve Menzies, a tour guide in South Africa. He realised that many tourists visiting SA on holiday have a great desire to give back. Through Steve and the tourists he brings down the Garden Route to Oudtshoorn and Safari Ostrich Farm, we have raised 80% of our overall funding.

A range of sponsors have assisted us in providing these children with basic education materials and a new building for the crèche. Since its inception, Safari Ostrich Farm, De Zeekoe Guest Farm, Welgeluk Farm and Steve Menzies, along with his beloved Dutch groups, have chosen to be involved in this Community School Project. This project is ongoing and still has much to achieve in improving the education conditions for the learners of both the Primary School and the crèche.
